A cancer sufferer has spoken of her “disgust” and fear after burglars broke into her home to steal metal. The thieves ransacked her east Belfast home, tearing radiators off walls and causing substantial water damage after ripping out pipes. It comes after the Belfast Telegraph reported last week that metal thieves are targeting homeowners in their quest to steal items which can be sold on for scrap. Such  major problems have more than doubled in the last year as metal prices soar.

CCTV that can automatically monitor criminal behaviour and track suspects is being developed by UK scientists. Researchers at Kingston University have created a system that uses artificial intelligence to recognise specific types of behaviour, such as someone holding a gun. The technology is capable of following a person across multiple cameras. Privacy campaigners warned that it might be used to target groups such as political protestors.
